Lectures in Japan: Czech Architecture in a Global Dialogue
On August 18 and 19, 2025, Radek Toman, Vice-Dean for International Relations at the Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology, delivered a series of open lectures at the Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo.
The first lecture, “Czech Architecture and Its Conceptual Approaches: From Raumplan to Rampplan”, introduced the Japanese audience to the development of modern Czech architecture, set against the backdrop of political events and historical circumstances that shaped Czech society. It also summarised the current tendencies in Czech architecture and urbanism.
The second lecture, “Cities and Their Empty Places”, focused on the teaching methods and studio work at the Faculty of Architecture in Brno, highlighting how student projects can improve urban environments.
The discussions with the Japanese audience offered valuable feedback and opened new perspectives, showing that architecture can become a universal language transcending borders. The lecture series was followed by a multi-day workshop led by Radek Toman, with the active participation of Joshibi University students.
